Ok so on one picture I saw... i think it was qwertzponys? sorry if i spelled that wrong. they had the stirrup pads with the cable ties and i was just wondering if you knew anything about them? Someone said they'll cut up your saddle? Thanks!!!

I have those too! they’re just grippies; like, thirty bucks. I’ve never had a problem with them scratching and neither has emma (qwertzponies) or my trainer who also uses them. They’re not super necessary but the extra stick is nice! I didn’t think twice about them until I rode consistently in emma’s saddle and my trainer’s saddle when I was riding some of their horses and I sort of ended up wanting a pair haha

no running today because I rode three horses then went to watch my friend and another kid from the barn do little jumpers at a local schooling show this evening.

Nemo was fabulous - we had our day of fun and jumping now its flatwork for a week or so. worked on moving him off my leg; trot to halt, halt to trot transitions, leg yielding and keeping the stride long and open at the trot and canter, leg yielding and then opening the stride once we’re straight at the trot and canter. leg yielded off the rail and over a pole in either direction to start working on his right drift over fences. to the left he didn’t want to move off my right leg and to the right he’d move off my leg and then take advantage and fall really hard right so we worked on keeping him straight and forward, not falling and/or stalling out. then long and low stretchy trot to stretch out his back.

then rode one of my friend’s horses; we did something similar. moving off the leg while still moving forward, collection and extension since she likes to curl her neck and hollow her back instead of collecting properly and get super heavy instead of extending properly. also lots of walking since she likes to jig.

then my trainer’s 6 y/o warmblood who is just coming back into work. just worked on keeping his little ADD head focused, having him come up and use his back while keeping his stride nice and smooth, and just generally moving nicely at the w/t/c and staying off the rail since he likes to lean on it. a bit of lateral work but nothing too ridiculous.

some photos from the show tonight and then there may be some from tomorrow. they’re mostly barn facebook type photos but I have some that are more tumblr-y.

Ok so in doing a photo project where I'm taking pics of different parts of a horse (eyes, nose, hoof, etc) and also a silhouette and I cannot get good pictures!! Since you're a really good photographer and you do pictures of horses do you have any suggestions? Thank you!!

I can try!

for details its nice to either have a macro lens (or setting; my little handheld camera has a really awesome macro setting that takes gorgeous macro shots) or a zoom lense so you can back up and then zoom in on what you like.

also pay attention to the time of day and the lighting! my favorite times are early morning and evening. its good for silhouettes - set the subject up so the light is behind them.

for the eyes, the best angle is probably from the front; try to catch the curve of light along the edge of the eye, the eyelashes, etc; focus on the details so it will still be an interesting photo! hooves can be hard so maybe try wetting them down on cement so there’s some reflection and shine and contrast, or maybe draw something on them with chalk? noses that have whiskers can be cute because it adds more detail. maybe try ears too? ears are always great. a swishing tail, the muscles, etc. here like this haha if that works

just focus on the details, I guess, and then pay attention to lighting! gah, good luck!

as long as you keep a bit of leg on him to keep him moving forward my horse carries himself really nicely, so I have a habit of letting my reins get really long and loopy and then if I need to like, actually use my hand for something I have a bit of an issue haha

oh well, I could have worse issues

nemo was doing a nice long and low stretchy trot but then stopped steering just as the little kids were coming toward us…hence the frantic grab at the reins haha

also it looks like I have a paunch belly. I promise I don’t. its just my shirt bunching up I swear

but I didn’t want to crop it out because I like his little ‘champion’ saddle pad

can you tell I haven’t done anything remotely athletic in six weeks? haha we mostly flatted but I popped a jump up at the end for funsies

also just an interesting little thing to notice - Nemo has a tendency to fall right really hard and when he jumps like that, he’s knees aren’t the best (also if this photo was taken half a second later they’d be a bit better but still not nice and square like what he can do) and I wasn’t correctly him very hard since, well, I’m just getting back into the swing of things so he was falling right before the fence and ta-da, like clockwork

just an interesting side note haha

also just ignore my position - between my ankle and before that being at school its been over two months since I actually jumped for real
